I’m diving into my next large project soon 🌝 @j.b.cohen99 came over and we prepped a few canvases together. I haven’t put in the work to get a canvas ready for a while because it is my least favorite step in the process, but it is an important to have a good surface to paint on 🎨
I started by spraying the back of the canvas with water. When the fibers dry, it tightens the canvas and prevents a “bouncy” surface 💧
Then a layer of fresh gesso and letting it fully dry ☀️
Next is to sand it down, so it is smooth and ready for paint👷‍♀️ we wore masks as to not inhale the dust created from sanding
I might not have a nice fancy studio for this prep (literally just in my garage) but I am grateful to have the space to prep my canvases as needed! Next is to get my sketch down onto the canvas ❣️

Behind the scenes for my solo show, The Goddess Within ✨
The entire process felt very serendipitous. My first time ever showing my art publicly was at a cafe in downtown Dekalb, thanks to @annagosci for inviting me. It was so exciting to share my art like that, and I was eager to do more. That happened on March 7th. My solo show happened March 8th, 6 years and a day later. 💐
I had completely forgotten about that show until I started seeing memories for it, and it was fun to think back on everything that had happened between then and now. Trying new things, sharing my art with a wider audience, and the inevitable burn out.
My solo show truly reignited my love for art and painting. I spent time researching, watching others paint online, and I learned so much about myself and my craft. 🌞

Words cannot fully capture the feeling of completing this painting and having her ready for my show on Sunday. The 3 years spent laboring over this painting and nearly abandoning it, only to restart and finish in a little under 6 months was cathartic to say the least. She grew, changed, and transformed with me. I have become a completely different soul in the time of beginning her, and now finishing her. I could talk about the symbolism within the piece and what she means to me all day, but I will leave that for my solo show on Sunday 🌾

I want to take a moment to remind everyone to take time for yourself and slow down in times of great turmoil. Our current life experience is very scary and overwhelming. As much as we want to show up and be there, it is also important to remember your own mental capacity to hold all of this. It’s okay to take a moment for yourself, to settle down, and recenter. Take a break and protect your peace ❤️‍🩹
I was feeling very overwhelmed and upset by the recent murders from ICE yesterday and I needed a break. I sat down and painted something that made me feel good and feel safe.
Take a break today, be there tomorrow ☀️

Opening reception is March 8th 11am - 3pm, in conjunction with @jubileeartisans Festival of Women, a celebration of international women’s day 🌎

This is an ode to women, the divine feminine, and everything in between ❤️‍🔥 the show will feature works of feminine nature, whether it be symbolism or women themselves, and other pieces created over the years.

Feminine energy has always been a primary focus to all my artwork and has played a huge role in my life. Being raised by my mother, surrounded by sisters, and now navigating life as a gay woman has left a profound impact on my life. I owe everything to the women I surround myself with and have been taught by. I will always have feminine energy in my art 💓 my art is an act of protest, love, and devotion and I cannot wait to share it with all of you 🫶🏻

With my solo show, artwork created by other amazing local female artists will be displayed to celebrate their hard work as well 🏅

Restarting an old painting - let’s talk about it 🎨
I started this painting years ago, in 2023. I was gifted a lovely new easel for my birthday and eagerly started this project with little to no preparation, planning, or good understanding of oil paint. Every time I worked on it in the first couple months, my colors were muddy, proportions were off and overall I just wasn’t happy with it. I did lots of reworking and covering up old parts I didn’t like, but I was never really satisfied. Eventually, long periods of time would leave the painting untouched, while I worked on smaller projects and practiced painting. Those periods of time proved to be fatal to this painting. Every time I picked up the paint brush and worked on it, my skills and knowledge had changed. The painting soon looked like multiple people had worked on it. When I looked at it, I only saw flaws and things I wish I had changed. The forms looked flat, colors muddy. There wasn’t anything I could do to fix it and get it to a point I could be proud of it. Everything was just off.
Within the last year, I have practiced oil painting a bit and worked on smaller projects I enjoyed and had fun with. Using bigger brush strokes and bolder color, bringing more fun into my craft. I learned a few new techniques, and things I wanted to try, like using a projector to get a painting started and lessening the pressure of painting perfectly the first time.
Over the years I have experienced a lot of personal growth, and a lot of heart ache which has made it difficult to create. In my current state, I am trying to create more as an act of protest and self love. This painting has changed, grown, and gone through metamorphosis with me. This painting holds a deep place in my heart as I explore my connection with femininity and the relationships with women in my life. It didn’t feel fair to toss it aside. It felt fitting to breathe new life into it, especially during these uncertain times. I am excited for this new journey, and I feel renewed 🩵

Another block in the hunting dog series 🦆 this one is an English setter 🌾
This one is a perfect example why you’d want to check a block before printing. Through this process, I was able to notice a part I forgot to carve and I will be able to take care of it before printing!
Though this is a recent step of the block printing process I’ve taken up, it’s been pretty useful just to get an idea of how the block will look before printing. I can check line consistency and any missed spots I can go back and carve. 🌽
